Antonini Graniti SA CH-6532 Castione Founded in 1865, this company is now in its fourth generation. After doing
business in Canton Uri, immediately after the opening of the S. Gottardo railway
at the end of the 1800s, it relocated to the Ticino, opening its own quarries in
Riviera. After having participated in the attempts of a company including all the
Ticino and Uri quarries, which ended in failure, they took over the bankruptcy
assets and in particular the quarries of Cresciano, Castione and
Wassen/Göschenen. If for several decades Cresciano was the fulcrum of the company
(in the 1950s it employed over 100 labourers), the business gradually moved
closer and closer to Castione, where the workshop was becoming increasingly
important with the acquisition of state-of-the-art machinery. In fact the
processing of natural stone, which used to be almost exclusively manual, made the
transition from being purely handicraft to becoming ever more mechanized. Whereas
during the early days only stone from company quarries of the Canton Uri,
Cresciano, Lodrino and later Castione was processed, other Ticino and foreign
stones were later added to the production range. In addition to the first
mechanical tools, multi-blade saws and bush-hammering machines, which had always
been used but now had become considerably improved - we also started using
milling machines, automatic shaping machines, multi-blade millers, diamond edges,
belt-driven polishing machines and combined machinery that could alternately
flame-cut, bush-hammer, sand and wash the slabs. With this mechanization and
rationalization, production output considerably increased, reaching 2000 square
meters monthly and sometimes even more. In collaboration with the companies of
the regions where the constructions were located, Antonini Graniti installs its
products in order to facilitate an ongoing and immediate contact with architects
and site supervisors.
